Accent lighting is a type of lighting used mostly for lighting up walkways with subtle light. However, this form of lighting can also be used to highlight focal points and key objects in the home or surrounding area. For example, many people like to show certain collectible items or other pieces of artwork in their home. Others may choose to highlight plants in the garden or water features. When adding light to a specific object, it can help set the mood to the area as well.
Some of the most popular accent lighting fixtures include recessed, track, and wall-mounted lights. Track lighting is considered the most flexible. Fixtures are aimed in any direction along the track and placed as needed. They can also be used with other light sources, like lamps or sconces. Recessed lighting fixtures blend into their surroundings. These are usually installed under cabinets, in ceilings, or within bookshelves and are available in many styles.
Wall-mounted fixtures are attached. Outdoors, light fixtures may include those placed in the ground or specialized lamp fixtures. Forms of accent lighting may include fiber optics, low-voltage halogen lights, LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting, and metal halides.
Halogen lights are great for spotlighting objects, as they put off a strong, white light. Fiber optics are good choices for lighting stairs; paths; or water features, like pools and ponds. Metal halides provide soft light and are best used for subtle lighting in small areas. LED lights are becoming more favored. They last longer, are more energy efficient, and are flexible enough for use in various lighting fixtures and situations.
Different types of accent lighting can be used, however path lighting is the most popular. Not only does it provide nighttime safety yet, can also accent interesting stones, patterns, or plants along the way. Floodlights can also provide safety. These accents lights are perfect for emphasizing architectural features in the landscape. For a more dramatic effect, the use of well lights can be placed in floor fixtures and concealed with plants or in ground to cast light upwards.
